Photo Genesis/Intense Pulsed Light

Photo Genesis is a series of intense pulsed light (IPL) treatments that improve the appearance of Rosacea, flushing and sun-damaged skin (brown sunspots), age spots, skin texture and red blood vessels. Treatment also improves the appearance of mild acne scars, shrinks large pores, corrects dark circles around the eyes and reduces fine lines.

Photo Genesis IPL features a cooling feature which is built into the light delivery head, making treatments much more comfortable than most other IPL systems. Two to six treatments will yield noticeable results. For rare or stubborn areas, additional treatment with little to no down time is recommended.

What areas can be treated?
Virtually any part of the body with uneven skin tone, diffuse redness, or sun and age spots can be safely treated. The face, chest, shoulders, hands and arms are the most common areas, because they have typically had the most sun exposure.

How does the treatment work?
An intense light is applied as a series of gentle pulses stimulate the treatment area. The light penetrates the skin and is absorbed by the abnormally dilated vessels or pigmentation. Heat then impairs the targeted vessels or lesions, and the body begins a natural healing process. Lesions darken before they flake off or are absorbed by the body.

How many treatments are needed?
Typically, one or two treatments are sufficient to see dramatic results. Additionally, two to three treatments may be required for very large or dark spots, densely freckled areas or excessively sun damaged skin. Follow-up treatments may be needed once a year to maintain desired results.

What do treatments feel like?
Photo Genesis requires no topical anesthetic. The area to be treated is cleansed, and a cold gel is applied. Patients are then given protective eyewear. Next, the smooth glass surface of the IPL hand piece is gently applied to the skin, delivering precise pulses of light to the specified area. Patients may feel a brief pinching sensation like a snap of a rubber band. Procedures run anywhere from 15-45 minutes. After treatment, the gel is removed; the area is cleaned, and a sun block is applied.

What happens after the treatment?
Immediately following the treatment, brown pigmented spots may start to darken. Patients may notice a slight reddening of the surrounding skin, and capillaries may be temporarily more visible. Any flushing of the skin typically subsides within a couple of hours. Side effects are rare; however, limiting sun exposure for several weeks prior to and after treatment will greatly minimize the risk of complications.

What are the noticeable improvements?
Many patients see a 70% to 90% improvement following treatment, and most are very happy with their results. Over the course of the next one to three weeks, darkened spots will fade and flake off. Mottled complexions will clear, and skin will feel much smoother and appear to be more evenly toned. The final result may not be apparent for a month or more.

Will the spots and redness reappear over time?
Over time, new spots may appear, if there is sufficient sun exposure. These too can be removed. Remember to liberally apply sunscreen when outdoors to minimize sun damage and the appearance of new spots and excessive redness. Schedule a free consultation to learn more about Photo Genesis.
